CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive modality that seeks to find and treat restrictions throughout the body systems.

Restrictions within the CranioSacral system can led to tension patterns, restrictions or affect the functioning of all bodily systems including the endocrine, cardio-respiratory, gastrointestinal, lymphatic, immune and reproductive systems.

Historically, CranioSacral Therapy stems from an Osteopathic lineage dating back to the late 1800’s. Today there are many schools of CranioSacral Therapy, however the term was originally coined by American Osteopath, Dr John E. Upledger who was the modern developer of this work.

Through various assessment tools, your CranioSacral Therapist can globally assess your body and CranioSacral system and find the “primary” restrictions or “root causes” of issues.

Over time our body may compensate around particular restrictions in order to keep us functioning well. When the body can no longer compensate or the restrictions are so great that it overcomes the body’s compensatory strategies, symptoms occur.

Your CranioSacral Therapist will take a thorough medical/health history in order to understand the history and patterns of possible compensation in your body. They will also ask you about the specific issues you wish to focus on.

During a CranioSacral Therapy session you remain fully clothed and most often lying on your back on the treatment table, although the treatment position can be modified depending on your comfort level.

Your therapist will use a series of whole body evaluation techniques to gain a global understanding and assessment of your system. Treatment consists of hands on techniques that use light pressures to invite the body and CranioSacral system toward balance. The area treated may or may not be the area in which you are experiencing symptoms. Some therapists may incorporate other techniques into the session depending on your individual needs.

Treatments traditionally last 60 minutes. Follow up visits will vary in number and frequency depending on your unique needs.
