Biofeedback can help you gain more control over these normally involuntary functions. The therapy is used to help prevent or treat conditions, including migraine headaches, chronic pain, incontinence, and high blood pressure (see Benefits of Bio Feedback for more conditions)

The idea behind biofeedback is that, by harnessing the power of your mind and becoming aware of what’s going on inside your body, you can gain more control over your health.

During a biofeedback session electrodes will be attached to your skin, which sends information to a monitoring box. The biofeedback therapist reads the measurements and through trial and error singles out mental activities that help regulate your bodily processes.

The three most common types of biofeedback therapy are:

Thermal biofeedback – which measures skin temperature

Electromyography – measures muscle tension

Neurofeedback – measures brain wave activity

Sessions are typically less than an hour long – most people will begin to see positive results after 8 sessions.

Biofeedback is typically used to treat chronic pain, urinary incontinence, high blood pressure, tension headache, and migraine headache.

Other conditions that biofeedback may also be useful for, include:

Back pain
High blood pressure
Chronic pain
Anorexia nervosa
Learning disabilities
Muscle spasms
Motion sickness
